“Studying at the University of Latvia not only provided me with new knowledge but also gave me hope for the future development of Ukraine. It helped me understand how European principles can be applied to reform our society. Latvia serves as an excellent example of improving governance and communication between citizens and the state. I will definitely use the knowledge I have gained in my professional work,” shared Polina, a student from Lviv University, reflecting on her three-month learning experience.
The "European Union Studies – Internal and External Policies" professional development program has been offered at UL since 2014. It provides international students with the opportunity to obtain an internationally recognized education certificate – UL lifelong learning diploma in continuing education. The program equips young professionals to actively participate in reform processes in their home countries.
The program covers five key courses focused on EU governance and its impact on partner countries. In the course "The Europeanization Process: From Partnership to Membership," students delve into the dynamics of partnerships and the path to EU membership. "Foundations of the European Union" explores the historical and political aspects of the union's formation. Latvia’s experiences with EU integration are studied in "Analysis of Latvian Policy and Public Policy," while innovative approaches to governance are explored in "Governance Innovations and Public Management in the European Union." Lastly, the course "Strategic Communication" equips participants with essential skills for fostering dialogue and effective information exchange.
This program has become an important platform for advancing the knowledge and skills needed for effective reform and governance in EU partner countries.
The training project “New Professionals Training Program for Ukrainian and Moldovan Students at the University of Latvia - EU Studies: Internal and Foreign Policy” is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its 2024 development cooperation budget.
