As of October 1, Professor Jānis Priede has been appointed Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences (FESS) at the University of Latvia (UL) for a four-year term. Professor Priede has already been fulfilling the duties of the Dean since July 1 of this year, when FESS was fully established as part of UL's internal consolidation, merging studies and research activities in economics, business, and a wide range of other social science disciplines.

The new Dean prioritizes a student- and lecturer-centered study process. To offer students a unique study experience in a modern environment and prepare them for future professional challenges, the Dean plans to integrate artificial intelligence tools into the study process. A gradual introduction of the major and minor approach in studies is also planned, thereby providing students with broader professional growth and career opportunities.

To enhance the scientific performance of FESS, the Faculty will continue to increase the number and citation impact of high-quality scientific publications. In research projects FESS will further develop international collaboration as well as cooperation with business partners.

In making important management decisions, the newly appointed Dean plans to involve student representatives, while offering advisory roles to emeritus professors and employers of the industry.

Alongside Professor Priede, the FESS leadership team will include Vice-Dean for Studies, Professor of Economics Margarita Dunska, and Vice-Dean for Research, Professor of Political Science Iveta Reinholde.
